Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read an NCS colour code?

An NCS code describes the visual properties of a colour: blackness (S), chromaticness (C), and hue (Φ). For example: S 2050-Y90R means a colour with 20% blackness, 50% chromaticness and a hue between yellow and red (90% towards red).

What is the difference between NCS and RAL?

NCS is a systematic colour system based on colour perception and visual properties. RAL is a colour collection with numbered colours without systematic relationships. NCS therefore offers more insight into colour relationships and enables colour analysis and palette development.

Can I have NCS colours mixed at a paint shop?

Yes, most professional paint manufacturers have NCS formulas available. You can provide an NCS colour code to your paint shop and they can create the colour for you. Please note that results may vary depending on the type of paint and substrate.
